Former FBI staff subpoenaed in Florida grand‑conspiracy probe

Former FBI employees who worked on the investigation into former President Donald Trump’s retention of classified documents have been subpoenaed to appear before a grand jury in Fort Pierce, Florida.

The subpoenas were disclosed on Thursday, and the former agents’ lawyers have asked U.S. District Judge Aileen Cannon for clarification on whether they can testify without breaching an order that bars the release of non‑public information about the case.

The Justice Department’s “grand conspiracy” probe, described by officials as examining a “deep state” effort to deprive Trump of his civil rights, expands beyond earlier inquiries into alleged Russian ties to the 2016 campaign. It also scrutinises the FBI’s 2022 search of Trump’s Mar‑a‑Lago estate for classified material, a search that underpinned one of four criminal cases the former president faced between his first and second terms.

Judge Cannon, appointed by Trump, previously blocked the release of a special counsel report on the classified‑documents investigation and barred the dissemination of related non‑public details. The subpoenaed staff seek confirmation that they may discuss the investigation with the grand jury and their own counsel without violating that order.

Without such clarification, the former employees risk contempt of court, limited testimony, or invoking self‑incrimination rights, which their lawyers say would create “unnecessary negative options for innocent former civil servants.” They state the witnesses are prepared to testify fully if the court permits.
