House Democrats outline oversight agenda if they win November vote

House Democrats say they will launch a sweeping oversight programme should they regain control of the chamber in the November elections.

The plan, outlined by senior Democrats including Hakeem Jeffries of New York, who is poised to become speaker, would give the party larger budgets, more staff and the power to investigate, subpoena and potentially address what they describe as widespread corruption and abuses of power in the Trump administration.

Jeffries warned that “if folks have been stealing from the American people, shortchanging the American people or screwing over the American people, we are going to hold the crooks accountable.” Impeachment of President Donald Trump and members of his Cabinet is not ruled out, although the focus may shift to cabinet officials such as Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth, who already faces impeachment articles from Rep. Thomas Massie.

Democratic leaders are preparing inquiries across several committees. Rep. Jamie Raskin, D‑Md., slated to chair the Judiciary Committee, called the issues “gargantuan” and urged swift action on systemic corruption. Rep. Robert Garcia of California, top Democrat on the Oversight and Government Reform Committee, listed five priorities, including the Trump family’s business dealings and the administration’s handling of immigration‑related civil‑rights matters.

The Democrats also anticipate resistance from the White House, warning that the administration could ignore subpoenas or withhold documents.
