Nor’easter triggers emergencies and widespread disruptions in New York and New Jersey

A powerful nor’easter has prompted states of emergency in New York and New Jersey as it brings coastal flooding, strong winds and heavy rain across the north‑eastern United States.

The US National Weather Service warned of “dangerous coastal flooding and beach conditions, strong winds and heavy rainfall” affecting areas from Virginia to Maine, with particular impact on New York City and Boston on Saturday.

Coastal towns in New Jersey such as Surf City and Manasquan reported streets and homes inundated with floodwater, while New York officials cautioned that wind gusts could reach 55 mph (86 km/h), causing downed trees and power lines. Mayor Zohran Mamdani urged residents not to travel or walk through floodwater.

More than 100,000 households in the northeast have lost electricity, according to PowerOutage tracker data. The Federal Aviation Administration advised passengers to check flight status, with over 2,400 flights delayed and 1,199 grounded.

Several major events were cancelled, including Ed Sheeran’s concert at Gillette Stadium, a Red Bull New York football match, and the Global Citizen Festival in Central Park. The Boston Red Sox postponed their final game against the Chicago Cubs to Sunday in Florida.

Governor Mikie Sherrill appealed to New Jerseyans to take the storm seriously and follow local guidance, while the NWS warned of immediate inundation in low‑lying coastal areas.
