Funding Approved for Pedestrian Crossing on Dangerous West Donegal Road

Funding has been approved for a new pedestrian crossing on the 60 km/h road at Stranacorkra, Derrybeg, in West Donegal.

The stretch of road, which has recorded eight collisions in less than a year, will see the crossing installed outside the An Chrannóg community building in Gweedore. Work is expected to begin in November.

Sinn Féin Councillor John Sheamais Ó Fearraigh, who has raised the issue at several Glenties Municipal District meetings, welcomed the announcement. In a May interview with Donegal Daily he warned that “someone will be killed” if action was not taken, and later posted on Facebook that the funding was “great news” for the local community.

Not all residents agree on the solution. Marie Shiels argued that speed‑reduction measures such as speed ramps would be more effective, stating that “the issues aren’t slowing for pedestrians, the issues are cars speeding.”
