Victim of 2024 Trump rally shooting in Pennsylvania dies

Jim Copenhaver, 76, one of three people shot at Donald Trump’s 2024 presidential campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, has died from complications related to his injuries, the Pennsylvania attorney general said.

Copenhaver was struck twice when a gunman opened fire from a nearby rooftop during the rally; another attendee, Corey Comperatore, was killed and Trump’s ear was grazed by a bullet. The shooter, 20‑year‑old Thomas Crooks, was killed by the Secret Service after the attack.

The Allegheny County medical examiner confirmed Copenhaver died on Wednesday at a hospital in Pittsburgh. He had previously been shot in the arm and abdomen, with a bullet remaining lodged next to his spine, forcing him to walk with a cane.

Copenhaver, a veteran, had previously sued the federal government, alleging the Secret Service failed to protect him and another survivor, David Dutch. In a statement, his family’s lawyer described his dedication to the United States as a defining part of his life.

President Trump posted on Truth Social, calling Copenhaver a “true American patriot” and offering prayers to his family. Republican members of the US House of Representatives also paid tribute to Copenhaver on social media.
