A West Cork man, Patrick Fitzpatrick of Sunset View, Corran, Leap, Co Cork, was sentenced to six years’ imprisonment for his central role in arranging a violent confrontation between two armed groups at Ballywaltrim playground, Bray, Co Wicklow, on 19 January 2025.

During the pre‑planned “straightener” fight, 36‑year‑old William Moorehouse, a father of seven, was stabbed five times and died at the scene. The judge, Ms Justice Karen O’Connor, rejected any claim that the incident was an “alternative dispute resolution”, calling the violence “utterly reprehensible and unacceptable”.

Fitzpatrick pleaded guilty to violent disorder and to producing a knife to intimidate another person during the fight. He was found to have organised the attack, driving a jeep that transported men and weapons to the playground, and coordinating the participants via text messages, including references to a “yoke”, believed by gardaí to denote a firearm.

The court heard that up to 14 individuals were involved, and that after the stabbing the dispute continued in the car park, leading to vehicle ramming and a subsequent chase. A murder charge against Fitzpatrick was later dropped by the State.

Ms Justice O’Connor emphasised the need for community spaces to be safe, noting the proximity of a community centre where children were present, and warned that taking “the law into their own hands” will result in incarceration.
