Unions have warned that a major strike could be staged on Wednesday, 11 November 2026, if public sector pay talks do not produce a draft agreement.
Talks at the Workplace Relations Commission entered their tenth day today, with the ICTU Public Services Committee chair, Kevin Callinan, writing to fellow union leaders to convene a committee meeting on Monday for a report on the negotiations.
Callinan said that without a draft deal, members would consider a proposal for a nationwide strike, involving a demonstration in Dublin and additional demonstrations in major regional locations.
The threat follows a 24‑hour strike earlier this month that saw more than 300,000 public sector workers, including teachers, nurses and doctors, walk out on 14 October – the largest national strike since the post‑2008 economic downturn. Hundreds of workers in Donegal also participated.
A second planned strike was suspended to allow further talks, but a work‑to‑rule campaign continues across the public sector.
