Ireland has become a member of the European Laboratory for Learning and Intelligent Systems (ELLIS) network with the launch of ELLIS Unit Ireland.

The new unit, the first Irish presence in the pan‑European network, joins 49 other units across Europe and follows recent additions in Austria, France, Germany and Norway, which also joins for the first time.

ELLIS Unit Ireland is hosted by Rinn AI, the national centre for data science and artificial intelligence research, and is funded by Research Ireland. Prof Noel O’Connor, director of Rinn AI, will lead the unit, focusing on fundamental AI research in machine learning, computer vision, natural language processing and information retrieval.

The unit will act as a local hub for researchers, enabling collaboration across disciplines, engagement with policymakers and societal stakeholders, and the training of the next generation of AI and machine‑learning researchers throughout the country.

Prof O’Connor said the inclusion “opens new doors for collaboration, gives our researchers and students a platform on the European stage and helps ensure the AI we develop is shaped by the people it serves.”
