Former US president Donald Trump told a rally in Sioux City, Iowa, on Thursday that he believes he has “the right to run again” for president, despite the US Constitution prohibiting a third term.

During his remarks, Trump said, “I don’t know who is going to be your next president and I think the law said, I’m not 100% sure, but I think the law says I’m not allowed to run again.” The comment revived a claim he has made repeatedly that a third term could be possible, even though the Constitution clearly bars any president from serving more than two elected terms.

Constitutional limits reaffirmed

Legal experts and US officials have reiterated that the 22nd Amendment, ratified in 1951, limits presidents to two terms, whether consecutive or not. The amendment was introduced after Franklin D. Roosevelt’s four‑term presidency.

Trump’s remarks came as he continues to campaign for Republican candidates ahead of the 2024 election cycle, drawing attention to his ongoing influence within the party.
