Limerick‑born striker Ronan Coughlan scored the opening goal as Division Two side Fleetwood Town eliminated Premier League champions Arsenal in the Carabao Cup last‑16 on Tuesday night.

The match at Highbury Stadium finished 1‑1 after normal time, and Fleetwood prevailed 5‑3 in the ensuing penalty shoot‑out held at the Memorial Stand end of the 5,000‑capacity ground.

Coughlan’s goal came after Arsenal goalkeeper Aaron Meslier dived, allowing the Irish forward to roll the ball into the opposite corner. Fleetwood goalkeeper Jay Lynch later saved a penalty from Bruno Guimarães, securing the shoot‑out win.

Arsenal’s Max Dowman was sent off near the end of the game. Coughlan, who began his career with Mungret Regional and has previously played for Limerick FC, Huddersfield Town, Cork City, Sligo Rovers, St Patrick’s Athletic and Waterford FC, has made over 50 competitive appearances for Fleetwood since joining in early 2024.
