Munster interim CEO Avan Lee was praised by Leinster captain Clayton McMillan for issuing a “brave statement” following the disciplinary committee’s decision to clear Tadhg Furlong of foul play.

Furlong had been cited after last Saturday’s inter‑provincial match when Munster forward Gavin Coombes alleged his testicles were grabbed at a ruck before half‑time. The referee and TMO found no evidence at the time, but Law 9.27 led to a citation. An independent disciplinary committee unanimously dismissed the complaint, concluding that Furlong had not committed foul play and that Coombes gave an honest account of the incident.

Leinster forwards coach Robin McBryde and Ireland kicking coach Johnny Sexton also defended Furlong publicly. Munster’s statement affirmed continued backing for Coombes and criticised “unhelpful commentary from people with a clear influence over public opinion.”

McMillan made his comments after Munster’s 15‑3 URC loss to the Sharks, a defeat that left the province 11th in the league. He lauded Lee’s statement and praised Coombes for speaking his truth, while acknowledging the team’s disappointing performance and the need to reflect during the upcoming five‑week break.

Looking ahead

With the URC entering a lengthy pause for the November Test window, McMillan said the break offers an opportunity for Munster to assess their position and address injuries before the season resumes.
