A judge in Portlaoise District Court expressed disgust at a 42‑year‑old man who turned up in court dressed “like he’s going to Ibiza”.

During an in‑camera family law sitting, the man explained that he missed a probation and welfare appointment because his free‑travel pass had expired and he was removed from a train. Judge Andrew Cody responded that the defendant, who has 49 previous convictions, would “get free travel up the Dublin Road very quicky”.

The defendant had previously appeared in court last month for breaching a safety order on 12 March, to which he pleaded guilty. Judge Cody noted that the man had called his ex‑partner a “whore and a prostitute” and then appeared in court in a bright‑coloured flowery top and shorts, showing disrespect to the court.

Garda Sergeant Kirby confirmed the accused had not been to Garda attention since his last court appearance. Judge Cody gave the man a final chance to engage with probation services, warning “be under no illusion if he doesn’t”, and remanded him on continuing bail until the 21 January sitting.
