Donegal County Council has warned residents to avoid all non‑essential travel as Storm Boelo moves into the county.

The council’s Severe Weather Assessment Team, working with Met Éireann, An Garda Síochána and emergency services, says surface flooding has already been reported in some areas.

An orange wind warning remains in force until 09:00 GMT on Sunday, with Met Éireann highlighting risks including property damage, fallen trees blocking roads, power outages, hazardous driving conditions, transport disruptions, large coastal waves, localised coastal flooding and dangerous conditions for outdoor activities.

In addition, a Red Marine warning is in effect from 19:00 this evening until 06:00 the following morning, prompting island communities and exposed coastal residents to shelter in place.

The council advises the public to stay away from beaches, piers, harbours, promenades and cliff walks where wave overtopping may occur. The Harry Blaney Bridge is closed until tomorrow morning due to high winds, and the Pier Car Park in Donegal Town will be shut from 16:00 today because of flood risk.

For non‑emergency enquiries the council can be contacted on 074 91 53900; out‑of‑hours road issues on 074 91 72288, and emergencies requiring the fire service on 999 or 112.
