Donegal County Councillor Dakota Nic Mheanman has become a member of the Young Elected Politicians (YEPs) network of the European Committee of the Regions.

Nic Mheanman, a Sinn Féin councillor representing the Lifford‑Stranorlar Municipal District, attended the network’s external meeting in Terimini Imerese, Sicily, before taking up the role.

She said joining YEPs offers an “exciting opportunity to learn from fellow young elected representatives across Europe, exchange ideas, and contribute to the political conversations that will shape the future of the European Union.”

Nic Mheanman thanked the Greens and the Progressives group for accepting her into the grouping and expressed her intention to bring her own experiences to the network.

The European Committee of the Regions, established in 1994 and based in the Jacques Delors building in Brussels, is the EU’s assembly of local and regional representatives, giving sub‑national authorities a direct voice in EU institutions.

Nic Mheanman was elected to Donegal County Council in 2024, securing 839 first‑preference votes and retaining the Sinn Féin seat vacated that year by Liam Doherty.
