Dutch cyber‑security CTO arrested over ShinyHunters links and murder plot

A 24‑year‑old man from Amsterdam was arrested on 15 September on suspicion of involvement with the cyber‑crime group ShinyHunters and of planning two murders abroad, Dutch police said.

The detainee, described as the chief technology officer and security lead at a Dutch cybersecurity firm, is being held in isolation and will remain in pre‑trial detention for at least 90 days.

Police said a large amount of information was found on his laptop, including details of the alleged murder plans, which are unrelated to the investigation into ShinyHunters.

ShinyHunters, active since around 2019, is known for large‑scale data theft and extortion, recently claiming attacks on the FBI, the European Commission and the education platform Canvas, as well as links to incidents involving Salesforce, Ticketmaster and AT&T.

International law‑enforcement cooperation continues, with the FBI confirming ongoing work on leads stemming from the arrest.
