Hallgrímsson confirms Serbia Nations League match will go ahead

Ireland manager Heimir Hallgrímsson said the Nations League fixture in Serbia next Sunday will proceed as scheduled.

He stressed that the Football Association of Ireland has committed to playing both matches – the opening game against Israel and the subsequent clash with Austria on Thursday – and that the squad must focus on the Austrian tie first.

Hallgrímsson also spoke about midfielder Finn Azaz, describing him as “one of the people I admire the most in the world right now” for his emotional control and professionalism during the controversy surrounding the Israel match, which Ireland won 3‑0.

Although Azaz did not feature in the Israel game, the manager explained it was a tactical decision and that Azaz was “in a different position to other players in the squad”.

The manager also praised goalkeeper Gavin Bazunu, who opted out of the Israel fixture and will be replaced by Luton goalkeeper Josh Keeley for the Serbia match, highlighting Bazunu’s character and the squad’s unity.

Focus remains on Austria before Serbia

Hallgrímsson added that the team will take each day as it comes after the Austria match, aiming to maintain concentration amid the ongoing discussions.
