Fiosrú, the independent Garda oversight body, has opened an investigation into the death of former Detective Garda Colm Horkan.
Horkan was shot 11 times on 17 June 2020 after his assailant seized his firearm while he was on duty in Castlerea, Co Roscommon. The investigation follows renewed calls from his family for a formal inquiry, particularly concerning the holster he was wearing at the time.
The Horkan family said protected disclosures indicated the holster was “faulty, not fit for purpose, made by a saddlery” and that complaints about it had been made previously. They have urged a thorough review of the equipment’s safety and suitability.
Justice Minister Jim O’Callaghan requested the public‑interest investigation in a letter to Police Ombudsman Emily Logan dated 2 November 2026. The Ombudsman has confirmed contact with the Horkan family and will cooperate with Fiosrú’s inquiry.
The probe comes amid broader concerns about protected disclosures within An Garda Síochána, highlighting the need for robust oversight of equipment and safety procedures.
