Hector Ó hEochagáin returns to South America after almost 25 years for the new TG4 travel series “Hola Hector — Ó Bogota go Buenos Aires”.
The seven‑part series follows Ó hEochagáin and his film crew as they explore the Amazon, Brazil, Colombia, Argentina and, notably, Bolivia, which he describes as the most diverse country he has visited.
In Bolivia, he joins motorists in Copacabana to have his jeep blessed by a local priest who sprinkles alcohol on the wheels, and he marvels at the cable‑car network that ferries commuters over La Paz. He also visits a conservation reserve where jaguars are seen, and comments on the contrast between the high Andes and the tropical plains, including swampland that feels “Amazonian‑like”.
Ó hEochagáin reflects on the striking scenery of Lake Titicaca at 4,000 metres altitude, calling the views “postcard stuff”. He also highlights the vibrant barrios of South American cities, taking a moto‑taxi to La Honda in Medellín to visit a girls’ boxing club inspired by Katie Taylor.
The series also features a six‑month investigation that led Ó hEochagáin to a promising Brazilian Olympic prospect, Graziela Paulino dos Santos, in an Amazon tribe.
