SuperValu confirmed that refrigeration units in 13 of its Irish stores have been affected by a cyberattack.
The incidents, which have been reported in recent weeks, follow similar attacks on supermarket fridges across Europe. The compromised devices are connected to the internet for remote monitoring and maintenance, a feature that also makes them vulnerable to hacking.
Industry experts note that any equipment with an online connection – including heating systems, security cameras and hospital devices – can be targeted if proper safeguards are not in place. A breach could allow attackers to alter temperature settings or disable alarms, potentially impacting food safety and store operations.
While the full extent of the disruption has not been disclosed, the episode highlights the growing importance of cybersecurity for businesses that rely on connected technology. Authorities and suppliers are being urged to review security measures, such as isolating critical equipment from main networks and keeping software up to date.
Consumers are advised to remain vigilant online, use two‑factor authentication and keep their devices’ software current.
