Ciara Mageean, the Irish 1500 m gold medallist, died on 1 November 2025, surrounded by friends and family.
She had disclosed a stage‑four bowel cancer diagnosis in July 2025. Mageean represented Ireland at the Rio 2016 and Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games and won the European 1500 m title in Rome 2024.
Gavin Noble, Olympian and Chef de Mission for Team Ireland at the Paris 2024 Games, told The Claire Byrne Show that Mageean had a “natural ability to connect with people” and that her successes were always shared, making the nation proud to wear the Irish vest.
Martina McCarthy, a friend and occasional strength‑and‑conditioning coach, highlighted Mageean’s open heart, her willingness to mentor younger athletes and her effort to make them feel welcome, even in the weeks before her death.
Former Irish sprinter David Gillick, who co‑launched Mageean’s book in summer 2025, described her as “remarkable” and noted the difficulty of her passing for her husband Thomas and her family.
Tributes have continued to flow on social media, with many recalling her boundless energy, smile and dedication to Irish athletics.
