Speaker warns Government of further fuel protests over diesel and petrol costs

A speaker at a protest in Moate, County Westmeath, warned the Government that there will be consequences unless concerns about the cost of diesel and petrol are taken seriously.

Hundreds gathered in Moate yesterday to voice frustration over rising fuel prices, just days before Budget 2027 is presented to TDs in Dáil Éireann. The speaker cautioned that the spring fuel protests could be repeated if demands are not addressed.

“We also have learned from these fuel protests and we know exactly which way to go about it so that’s your warning,” the speaker said, adding that the movement is nationwide, with a network spanning from Donegal to Cork, Galway to Dublin.

The protestors claimed a membership of around 17,500 to 18,000, suggesting they have the numbers to out‑number the Gardaí if needed.

Minister Darragh Calleary previously warned that global fuel prices are “out of our control”, but assured the Government is “working very hard” on a plan to keep pump prices as low as possible.
