Bus drivers on Bus Éireann routes in Limerick have reported a surge in anti‑social incidents involving fireworks in the days leading up to Halloween.

Gangs of young people have been throwing fireworks into vehicles, prompting temporary suspensions of the 303 route from Pineview to Kilmallock Road and the Expressway Route 13 (Limerick‑Tralee). Aontú councillor Sarah Beasley said several drivers have contacted her “at their wits end” after a firework exploded inside a bus, terrifying an elderly passenger.

Earlier incidents on the 303 route involved children aged 10‑11 embedding concealed blades in seats, damaging upholstery and endangering passengers. Bus Éireann confirmed that services are being curtailed where driver, vehicle or passenger safety is at risk, but that most Limerick services continue as normal.

The company has arranged additional security for the Halloween period and is working with An Garda Síochána. Gardaí have reminded the public that unlicensed fireworks are illegal under the Explosives Act and Criminal Justice Act, with penalties of up to €10,000 and five years’ imprisonment.

Passengers and staff are urged to report any incidents to Gardaí, the bus driver, or Bus Éireann’s Customer Care Team on 0818 294 015.
