Greenville Police in South Carolina have confirmed that the death of US actress Hayden Panettiere has been ruled accidental, bringing their local investigation to a close.

Panettiere, aged 36, was found unresponsive on 16 August in a South Carolina residence. The Greenville County Coroner’s Office later reported that she died from the toxic effects of fentanyl, Xanax and several other substances, including methocarbamol and quetiapine.

In a statement, the police said the ruling was based on the medical examiner’s determination and the findings of their investigation. The US Drug Enforcement Agency had also been involved in the probe, though it was not clear whether that investigation has concluded.

The actress, known for roles in “Heroes” and “Nashville,” had previously spoken publicly about her struggles with substance abuse. Emergency services treated her for cardiac arrest, and the autopsy showed no signs of trauma.

Police reports indicated that Panettiere’s ex‑boyfriend, Brian Hickerson, and his brother Zack were present when emergency services arrived.
