A man appearing from Mountjoy Prison by video link was sentenced to four months’ imprisonment for stealing food and a soft drink worth €5 from a Centra store in Riverstick, Co Cork.

Seamus Maughan, 44, of Glin Road, Coolock, Dublin 17, pleaded guilty at Clonakilty District Court to the theft that occurred on 29 October 2024. He took the items from the self‑service deli counter and left the shop without paying.

Maughan, who is already serving a sentence in Mountjoy for unrelated matters and has 121 previous convictions, told the court “Sorry about that”. He said he suffers from drug and alcohol addiction and is awaiting entry to Coolmine for treatment.

Judge Joanne Carroll sentenced him to four months in prison, suspending the final two months for one year, on the condition that he co‑operates with the Probation Service, attends all appointments and engages in addiction treatment. Maughan thanked the judge and said “Have a nice day”.

Legal proceedings

Maughan’s solicitor, Peter Connolly, could not represent him due to an ongoing solicitors’ dispute, but the defendant chose to proceed and enter a guilty plea.
