Limerick jockey Philip Byrnes scores double at Listowel Festival

At Listowel’s Harvest Racing Festival, Limerick‑born jockey Philip Byrnes rode two winners on the same day.

Byrnes first rode Golden Handshake, owned by William Durkan, to victory in the Seamus Mulvanney Bookmaker Novice Hurdle, moving from 11/2 to 5/2 odds.

He then completed a rapid‑fire double in the Brandon Hotel Handicap Hurdle aboard Glin Road Boy, trained by his father Charles, starting as the 7/4 favourite.

Local owners celebrate

Byrnes praised owner Paddy Mulvihill, a Moyvane native now residing in Adare, Limerick, saying the win was “fabulous” and hopeful for future successes.

Mulvihill, a long‑time sponsor of the County Senior Football Championship through Irish Wire Products, also saw Millstream Lady, owned by his neighbour Eamon Leahy and partners Seamus O’Riordan and Edward Hayes, win the Devon Inn Dan Sheehan Memorial Handicap Hurdle, a €20,000 race.

The €20,000 National was claimed by Willie/Danny Mullins on Ballygunner Castle at 11/1.

Elsewhere, The Real Whacker, previously a National runner, won a Handicap Chase in Perth, Scotland, ridden by Brian Hughes.
