Former DUP leader and Stormont Minister Jeffrey Donaldson was sentenced yesterday to 15 years’ imprisonment for 18 historic sexual offences against two girls.

Judge Paul Ramsey ordered that half of the term will be served in prison, with the balance served on licence in the community, meaning Donaldson is expected to spend roughly seven and a half years behind bars.

Allison Morris of the Belfast Telegraph explained that the offences occurred before the 2008 change to sentencing law, when defendants were entitled to a 50 % remission. Consequently, Donaldson will serve only half of the 15‑year term.

Donaldson has been in custody since his conviction in June following a four‑week trial. If he serves the full custodial portion, release is projected around his 71st birthday.

The court heard a pre‑sentencing report identified a “medium risk” of re‑offending and noted that Donaldson showed no remorse. He intends to appeal the convictions on narrow points of law, including jury directions and the conduct of his wife Eleanor Donaldson’s “trial of the facts”.

Eleanor Donaldson, found unfit to stand trial, will be sentenced later but is not expected to receive a custodial term.
