Two‑year driving ban imposed on Letterkenny motorist without licence or insurance

A man has received a two‑year disqualification from driving after being stopped without a licence or insurance in Letterkenny.

Luiz Felipe Zacarias Leal, 26, of Rann Mor Meadow, Letterkenny, was charged after Garda Stephen Joseph Carroll of the Letterkenny Roads Policing Unit stopped his Toyota Aygo on 30 January 2026 at 11.48 am on High Road. Automatic number‑plate recognition flagged the vehicle as uninsured.

Leal had no licence or insurance documents when first questioned and failed to produce them later at Letterkenny Garda Station. He was charged with driving without insurance, driving without a licence and failing to produce the required documents, offences that breach the Road Traffic Act 1961.

At Letterkenny District Court, Judge Emile Daly convicted Leal, imposing a €250 fine for driving without a licence and a €350 fine for driving without insurance, each payable within six months. The judge also ordered a two‑year driving disqualification. Garda Sergeant Maurice Doyle noted that Leal has no previous convictions.
