Coalition dispute emerges over new Community Sports Facilities Fund

A new rift has surfaced within the governing coalition over the rollout of the Community Sports Facilities Fund (CSFF), which is set to replace the Sports Capital Programme later this year.

Fianna Fáil TDs met on Wednesday, claiming that Fine Gael members and supporting independents had prematurely disclosed details of the scheme. Fianna Fáil sources said they were “mystified” by what they described as “politicking”.

Fine Gael, however, maintains that information about the CSFF was shared with all coalition partners and that any further dissemination was a matter for Fianna Fáil. The Department of Culture, Communications and Sport declined to confirm whether the scheme’s details had been finalised when approached by The Irish Examiner.

Late on Tuesday, several Fine Gael TDs released opening‑date information, prompting junior sports minister Charlie McConalogue to ask Fianna Fáil members to hold back until the details were finalised. By mid‑morning, Fianna Fáil TDs posted their own announcements alongside those of Fine Gael TDs and independents Sean Canney and Barry Heneghan.

In a separate email to councillors, Longford‑Westmeath TD Micheál Carrigy warned that briefings by Minister McConalogue on the CSFF had caused confusion among sports clubs, urging that public meetings wait until full eligibility criteria are confirmed.

According to the widely shared posts, the scheme is scheduled to open for registrations next Monday.
