Mark English welcomes home European gold, urges Donegal youth

European 800m champion Mark English addressed young athletes in Donegal on Wednesday, encouraging them to pursue their own sporting dreams.

A large crowd gathered at the Finn Valley Centre as the Finn Valley AC athlete was formally welcomed back after a season that saw him claim European gold in Birmingham and finish sixth at the World Ultimate Championships. English, 33, broke the European Championships record with a time of 1:45.26, surpassing Olaf Beyer’s 1978 mark.

Speaking to the audience, English said: “Never let anyone tell you that you’re limited by where you come from,” and added that consistency, patience and trust in coaches are key to success. He highlighted the challenges athletes face, including injuries and setbacks, but stressed that perseverance ultimately pays off.

Finn Valley AC founder and former Irish athletics manager Patsy McGonagle praised the event as a celebration of Donegal’s sporting pathway, noting that English’s journey began at Woodlands National School. County Councillors Ciaran Brogan and Martin Harley, two‑time Olympian Danny McDaid and Stranorlar parish priest Fr Kieran McAteer were among the special guests.

English reflected on his training in Donegal’s harsh winters and the support he received from local coaches, reaffirming his belief that any young person from the county can achieve at the highest level.
