Waterford Airport submits plans for major terminal extension and hangars

Waterford Airport has lodged planning applications with Waterford City and County Council for a two‑storey terminal extension and the construction of eight new hangars.

The proposal seeks permission for a 3,672 m² two‑storey addition to the sides and rear of the existing terminal, together with 16,553 m² of hangar structures that will house office facilities, an ESB sub‑station, storage and parking.

The development forms part of a €30 million programme to transform the Killowen site into a modern regional hub, including a runway extension that began in May, lengthening the runway to 2,287 metres and widening it to 45 metres to accommodate large commercial jets.

Key features of the terminal upgrade include new arrivals and departures areas, a duty‑free shop, coffee shop, canteen, exhibition space and plant rooms. A dedicated Fixed Base Operator (FBO) facility will serve business and private‑aviation passengers, with its own external entrance and self‑contained lounge and hospitality areas.

The plans also propose a two‑storey extension to the airport fire‑station, adding an extra fire‑engine parking bay. The airport, located 9 km from Waterford city, aims to resume commercial passenger services by late 2027 and handle more than 400,000 passengers annually within three years, targeting up to 400,000 passengers by 2032.

Investment is led by US investor Kelcy Warren, with local businessman William Bolster holding a smaller share. Waterford City and County Council previously waived a €670,000 loan to facilitate the redevelopment.
