Russian drone strikes hit Kyiv school and bridge amid intensified attacks

A Russian drone struck a school in Kyiv on Thursday, Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko said, with children and staff sheltering and no immediate reports of casualties.

In the same wave of attacks, two drones hit a key bridge linking eastern and western Kyiv, prompting the suspension of metro services and ground public transport.

Ukraine’s nuclear safety watchdog reported that a Russian drone hit the grounds of a nuclear research facility in Kyiv on Wednesday, causing a fire that was quickly extinguished. The regulator confirmed that the test reactor, shut down since 2022, was undamaged and no injuries occurred.

The Ukrainian air force said Russian drone strikes increased in September, with 3,177 attacks recorded up to 29 September, compared with 2,850 in August.

In Russia’s Belgorod region, local authorities said one man was killed when a drone exploded in the town of Graivoron.

The United Kingdom announced a new package of 31 sanctions targeting individuals involved in the detention, torture and indoctrination of Ukrainian civilians and children, stating it would continue to support Ukraine without seeking direct confrontation with Russia.
