A man whose cat was thrown onto a Halloween bonfire and later put down has warned pet owners to keep animals indoors this weekend.

Martin, who lives in Blanchardstown, said his family had “adopted” a friendly white cat called Snowy twenty years ago. He recalled Snowy often hanging out in the back garden, enjoying attention from the children and adults.

After returning from a weekend visit to his wife’s mother in Galway, Martin was told by a neighbour that Snowy had appeared on an RTÉ News report. The story described a cat found badly burned in Blanchardstown. Martin contacted the DSPCA, which confirmed Snowy was the cat in question.

When the family saw Snowy, he was severely burned and unable to meow. Despite the DSPCA’s efforts to nurse him, the injuries were too grave and Snowy was euthanised the following day.

Martin said Snowy’s “kindness was his downfall” and urged anyone with a pet to keep them inside over the Halloween weekend, warning that strangers might “grab them, throw them in, thinking it’s a laugh”.
