A 26‑year‑old man, John McDonagh, has been committed to the Circuit Court on a charge of serious assault in Donegal Town.

McDonagh appeared before Ballyshannon District Court after being charged by the Gardaí with assaulting a man and causing him harm on 14 October 2024 at Railway Park, Donegal Town. The offence is contrary to sections 3(1) and 3(2) of the Non‑Fatal Offences Against the Person Act 1997, as amended by section 20 of the Criminal Justice (Miscellaneous Provisions) Act 2023.

The Director of Public Prosecutions directed that the case be prosecuted on indictment in the Circuit Court and consented to a signed guilty plea. The matter was adjourned to January to allow service of a book of evidence.

Judge Éiteáin Cunningham granted bail on conditions that McDonagh must not contact, directly or indirectly, the alleged injured party or any witnesses, must not commit any further offence, must maintain good behaviour, and remain available 24 hours a day for contact by the Gardaí on a mobile phone.
