The Irish Soccer Referees Society said there must be “zero tolerance” for racist abuse in sport following an alleged incident at an under‑15 match between the Republic of Ireland and England.

During the game, in which Ireland were leading 4‑1, a teenager claimed he was subjected to racist abuse, prompting England players to walk off the pitch. FIFA confirmed the matter will be referred to its independent disciplinary committee for further action.

Referees’ response

Sean Slattery, speaking on Lunchtime Live, explained that referees are required to issue an immediate red card to any player or coach heard using racist language, with no discretion. He added that officials must report the allegation and that the rule comes “from the top down”.

Slattery noted the rule is rarely invoked but stressed that when incidents occur, they will be dealt with firmly, reflecting Ireland’s multicultural society and the need for strict enforcement.
