A murder investigation has been opened by Gardaí after a fire in Birchwood, Waterford City, killed a man, a woman and two children.

The blaze broke out at about five in the morning. Two other children were rescued and are receiving treatment for critical injuries in hospital.

Gardaí remain at the scene alongside other emergency services, and the area around the house stays cordoned off while neighbours gather outside.

Waterford Garda Station has appointed a senior investigating officer and is urging anyone with information to contact them.

Chief reporter Barry Whyte told The Claire Byrne Show that officials have not yet explained the cause of the fire and that Gardaí are expected to hold a press conference around lunchtime.

The family involved is said to be well known locally, and the community is described as “absolutely devastated” by the tragedy.
