Man charged with Mallow murder appears in Fermoy District Court
A 39‑year‑old man, Alfred Gjonaj of Cork, appeared before Fermoy District Court on Monday charged with the murder…

The family of Detective Garda Colm Horkan says he “deserves a public inquiry” after he was shot dead while on duty in June 2020.
Horkan was killed in Castlerea, County Roscommon, when Stephen Silver removed the detective’s gun from its holster and used it to murder him. The incident has raised concerns about the safety and security of the holsters issued to members of An Garda Síochána.
The family alleges that Garda management were warned about possible design flaws in the holsters before the killing. On The Claire Byrne Show, Dermot Horkan, the victim’s brother, questioned the procurement procedures, acceptable standards and health‑and‑safety processes surrounding the holsters.
Dermot Horkan urged ministers to order a public inquiry, saying “if there’s no cover‑up … I can’t see why ministers can’t call for a public inquiry.” He added that his brother “deserves that” after giving his life to protect and serve.
The family also praised Labour TD Alan Kelly for his continued efforts to obtain answers. The Department of Justice has been contacted for comment.
