A Donegal man has been sentenced to 16 years in prison, with the final year suspended, for a series of sexual offences against a young girl.

Alan Brennan, 39, of Emmett Park, Castlefin, Co Donegal, pleaded guilty at the Central Criminal Court to multiple counts of rape, oral rape, sexual assault and sexual exploitation committed between 2019 and 2022. The victim, who wishes to remain anonymous, was in her early teenage years at the time of the abuse.

Mr Justice David Keane noted the offences constituted a three‑year campaign of rape and related crimes, highlighting Brennan’s “remorseless attitude” and the use of threatening images to coerce the girl. The judge set an original headline sentence of 18 years but reduced it to 16 years, suspending the final year on strict conditions, after taking Brennan’s belated guilty pleas and personal circumstances into account.

Brennan, who has ten prior convictions mainly for road‑traffic offences and harassment, was described by the judge as showing little insight and offering a “pro forma” apology. He is on medication for anxiety and will attend rehabilitation programmes while in prison.

Detective Garda Donal Callaghan confirmed the abuse came to light after images of the child were discovered on Brennan’s phone, leading to a formal report by the victim. The court heard Brennan had repeatedly threatened to publish the images, forced the girl to strip, partake in video calls and consume alcohol, and physically assaulted her when she tried to resist.

The victim’s impact statement described the lasting trauma and loss of innocence caused by the abuse.
