A newly‑opened €90 million surgical hub at Cork University Hospital (CUH) was forced to close for two weeks after environmental tests indicated possible air‑contamination.
The HSE South West Surgical Hub, officially opened by Minister for Health Jennifer Carroll McNeill and the Taoiseach on 28 September, remained shut until 12 October when additional building‑related operational checks were completed.
The facility comprises four operating theatres, outpatient consultation rooms, minor‑procedure rooms, patient assessment and recovery areas, and dedicated staff facilities. It was intended to deliver a high volume of low‑complexity elective surgeries to ease waiting‑list pressures.
Since reopening, fewer than ten patients have been treated, according to sources, with staffing and recruitment challenges cited as a factor. The HSE said recruitment for the hub has been ongoing since January through competitive processes and that no staff have been redeployed from CUH or other HSE sites.
During a Dáil debate on 7 October, Minister Carroll McNeill described the hub as “staffed” and “ready to serve patients,” a claim contested by Cork TD Liam Quaide, who highlighted the closure and staffing shortfalls.
The minister has not responded to requests for comment on the closure.
