A 37‑year‑old man was sentenced at Cork Circuit Criminal Court to three years’ imprisonment, with the final 18 months suspended, after pleading guilty to child neglect.

The conviction follows an incident on the night of 15 April 2024 when gardaí were alerted to a two‑year‑old child living in filthy conditions in a Cork apartment. When officers asked if a baby was present, the intoxicated father replied, “Yeah, who gives a shit?”

Garda Darren Lynn testified that the parents had been drinking on the street after 11 pm and the mother was later taken to hospital. The father was seen walking aggressively and intoxicated after midnight, prompting members of the public to call the gardaí.

Upon entering the flat, officers found the child in a dirty nappy on an unclean bed, surrounded by rubbish, smoke and alcohol odour, with no toys, clean clothes or food. The child was immediately removed, given fresh clothing and toys, and placed in the care of her aunt.

Judge Sinéad Behan remarked that the defendant showed little insight into the seriousness of his actions and noted his high risk of reoffending, citing his own background of childhood neglect.

During the hearing, the father admitted to being intoxicated, saying he had “one beer and another one at home” and did not answer the door because the child was asleep. His barrister, Elaine Audley, highlighted his troubled upbringing and volatile relationship, adding that he hopes to overcome his addictions and find employment after release.
