A 57‑year‑old Cork man has pleaded guilty to 16 charges relating to the theft of almost €50,000 from the not‑for‑profit educational charity EIL Intercultural Learning.

Liam Shannahan of Lake View, Midleton, County Cork, appeared in Cork District Court on Tuesday and indicated he would sign pleas of guilty to all counts. The offences cover a period from 2014 to 2020 and include a specific charge that he stole approximately €8,850 between 1 January and 31 December 2020.

EIL Intercultural Learning, based on Washington Street in Cork City, provides intercultural study abroad, youth leadership, language training, travel awards, scholarships and group programmes for more than 1,800 participants each year.

The case was brought forward by Sergeant Gearóid Davis and Judge David Waters ordered it to be sent to the Cork Circuit Criminal Court, with the trial set to commence on 27 October. Shannahan was represented by solicitor Don Ryan. No further details of the alleged thefts were disclosed in court, and further information is expected at the sentencing hearing.
