National Reptile Zoo marks 20 years of operation in Kilkenny

The National Reptile Zoo in Kilkenny is celebrating its 20th anniversary, having opened its doors in March 2006.

Founded by James Hennessy, the attraction began as a small reptile display in Gowran and has grown into Ireland’s first and only dedicated reptile zoo. Over two decades it has developed into an internationally linked centre for conservation, education and research.

The milestone highlights the zoo’s role in promoting reptile awareness and supporting scientific studies, while also contributing to tourism in County Kilkenny.

Organisers plan a series of events throughout the year to commemorate the anniversary, showcasing the diverse collection of reptiles and the zoo’s ongoing conservation projects.
