Donald Trump’s defeat in the recent US mid‑term elections limits his ability to shape policy at home, analysts say.

The loss of both houses of Congress reduces the former president’s capacity to dictate, manoeuvre and disrupt domestic legislation. However, as former president and commander‑in‑chief, he retains broad authority over the United States’ military forces, which could influence his actions abroad.

In the weeks before the vote, US military deployments and Trump’s statements heightened speculation about a possible return to conflict with Iran. On the eve of the elections, a limited US bombing raid was carried out on an Iranian island in the Gulf.

Democratic Senator Chris Murphy, before a stroke, attended a classified briefing on potential military options against Iran and described the plans as “insane”, warning of a “devastating escalation”.

Iran’s parliament speaker, Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, warned on social media that the American public’s opposition to war could lead to severe consequences if the US government ignored it.

In Israel, acting prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu has urged Trump to adopt a tougher stance on Tehran, seeking to bring down the Islamic regime and potentially use a renewed conflict to strengthen his own political position.

Other foreign issues that may attract Trump’s focus include the war in Ukraine, where he previously lifted sanctions on Moscow to secure Russian diesel, and the broader economic pressures stemming from the conflict in the Strait of Hormuz.
