Democrat Haley Stevens, who lost to Abdul El‑Sayed in Michigan’s Senate primary, appeared alongside Republican candidate Mike Rogers at a church in Detroit as tensions within the Democratic camp intensified days before the election.
The joint appearance followed Stevens being uninvited from a planned joint event with El‑Sayed, organised by fellow Democrat Debbie Dingell. Dingell said she asked Stevens not to attend because the gathering had become “too distracting” and the bishop was upset that it was being used for political purposes.
Stevens, who criticised El‑Sayed’s comments on Israel, has not confirmed whether she will attend the church service. In a statement released on Saturday night she welcomed El‑Sayed’s disagreement with an external advertisement and urged voters to “Go vote!”.
El‑Sayed, a former Michigan public‑health official, is in a close contest with former congressman Mike Rogers for the seat held by retiring Democrat Gary Peters. The race is seen as pivotal for control of the U.S. Senate.
Democrats are seeking to mobilise Black and Jewish voters in Wayne and Oakland counties, where the primary was fiercely contested and saw heavy outside spending, including from an AIPAC‑linked super PAC that backed Stevens.
