The Government has said security at EU Presidency events will remain sufficient even if Gardaí adopt a work‑to‑rule approach.

Today the executive committee of the Garda Representative Association (GRA) will vote on whether to implement work‑to‑rule for the final months of Ireland’s EU Presidency, meaning officers would perform only the duties set out in their contracts.

A recent GRA survey indicated that 92 % of respondents were prepared to take industrial action. Minister of State for Justice Catherine Ardagh told Newstalk Breakfast that the role of Gardaí is “really important” and that the government is taking the issue seriously.

Ardagh said the reduced flexibility will not eliminate security, noting the successful conduct of the presidency to date. Fianna Fáil TD Ardagh added that the Garda Commissioner is confident in the force and that rosters will be adjusted to meet the presidency’s needs.

She clarified that Gardaí will not be fewer in number, but will work within contractual hours, and that leave will be restricted from 10 November to 14 November. The Commissioner has prepared for any industrial action.
