Reigning champions An Ghaeltacht have withdrawn from this year’s West Kerry Senior Football Championship after a series of postponed semi‑final fixtures.
Club chairperson Dara Ó Cinnéide said the decision was taken after “various notifications and an awful lot of mixed messages” regarding the Saturday semi‑final against Castlegregory. He added that the club could not continue in a competition “that wasn’t being shown respect”.
According to Ó Cinnéide, a West Kerry Board Fixtures Committee meeting was held on Saturday morning without its chairperson, resulting in a premature postponement of both semi‑finals. The club initially accepted the decision, but a subsequent reversal left Castlegregory unavailable and the An Ghaeltacht match postponed again, despite the other semi‑final proceeding.
The club highlighted that several players had taken time off work and travelled from Limerick, Cork and Dublin for the game, describing the administration of fixtures as “entirely unsatisfactory”.
While district championships in Kerry face scrutiny over inter‑county player workloads, Ó Cinnéide said An Ghaeltacht’s withdrawal is not linked to that broader debate, though it may spark further discussion.
In the other semi‑final, Dingle defeated Annascaul 1‑16 to 0‑11, with Kerry panellists Paul Geaney, Dylan Geaney and Tom O’Sullivan absent.
