Shane O’Donnell announces retirement from inter‑county and club hurling

Shane O’Donnell has confirmed his retirement from both inter‑county and club hurling.

The Clare star, a two‑time All‑Ireland winner, scored two points for Éire Óg in their Clare SHC semi‑final defeat, after previously stating that the season would be his last with club and county.

Speaking after the match, O’Donnell said he was grateful to have chosen the timing of his retirement and reflected on the achievements of recent years, describing the 2026 season as particularly demanding.

He explained that the increasing physical and mental toll, combined with plans to move abroad and a diminished enthusiasm for games, led him to conclude that it was the right moment to step away.

O’Donnell, a three‑time All‑Star and Hurler of the Year winner, highlighted the contrast between his early years with Éire Óg, when the club had never won a championship, and the recent county title secured last year.

He added that he and his fiancée, who now live in Dublin, are planning a move to New York for work, and that he is pleased to retire on his own terms rather than through injury.
