The US Justice Department has charged former FBI director James Comey with two counts of leaking national‑defence information, marking the third criminal charge brought against him by the Trump administration.

The charges were filed on Monday in federal court in Washington, DC. The indictment alleges that Comey disclosed classified material in 2016 and conspired with an unnamed individual to pass the information to a national news outlet.

Details of the alleged leak have not been disclosed in the filing. Comey, a vocal critic of former President Donald Trump, has previously faced scrutiny over his handling of investigations during the Trump era.

The case adds to a series of legal actions targeting a figure described by the administration as one of its most despised opponents.
