Donegal County Council has officially launched the County Donegal Biodiversity Action Plan 2026–2030, outlining practical measures to protect, restore and celebrate the county’s wildlife and habitats.

The plan was unveiled by Virginia Teehan, Chief Executive of The Heritage Council, at the Silver Tassie Hotel in Letterkenny on Friday 16 October 2026, during Climate Action Week. About 60 attendees, including Tidy Towns members, elected representatives, Council staff and nature project volunteers, were present.

Key focus areas

The five‑point strategy prioritises learning about Donegal’s wildlife, embedding biodiversity in Council policies and staff training, enhancing nature on Council‑managed land, parks and buildings, encouraging public engagement with nature, and collaborating with communities and organisations.

Cathaoirleach of Donegal County Council Cllr Gary Doherty highlighted the need for people to experience and connect with nature, while Virginia Teehan stressed the plan’s role in translating national biodiversity policy to the local level.

The plan, prepared by the Council’s Biodiversity Office with The Heritage Council, was shaped by the County Donegal Biodiversity Working Group, the County Donegal Heritage Forum and two rounds of public consultation. It was formally adopted by elected Council members on 25 May 2026.

Guests also heard from Louise Lang (Hare’s Corner), Anita Donaghy (BirdWatch Ireland) and broadcaster Joe Mahon, and a short film on pollinator support was screened. An illustrated “Plan at a Glance” funded by The Heritage Council offers simple actions for individuals and groups.
