Taoiseach Micheál Martin has said it is “up to Ryan Tubridy” whether he wishes to stand for election with Fianna Fáil.

Martin noted that Tubridy has “the DNA” of the party, pointing to Fianna Fáil ancestry on both sides of his family. He highlighted the involvement of the Andrews and Tubridy families since the party’s formation, mentioning Sean Tubridy, a founding member and early TD, as well as Pat, David and Barry Andrews.

During a Fianna Fáil centenary event in Galway last weekend, the 53‑year‑old former RTÉ broadcaster said he was “considering a move into politics” and spoke of “dreaming” about reclaiming his grandfather Sean Tubridy’s seat in Galway West on a second count.

When asked if he would like Tubridy to run for Fianna Fáil, Martin replied that the choice was Tubridy’s and that he would be “very welcome to come into politics”. He added that he has always encouraged young people to participate in public life.

Martin also referenced his own past comment about dreaming of winning an All‑Ireland with Cork and dismissed any suggestion that his remarks were disparaging.
