Dublin Mid‑West TD Mark Ward has introduced the Spiking Offences Bill 2026, which would make drink‑spiking a standalone offence punishable by up to ten years’ imprisonment.

The proposal follows reports that a 92‑year‑old man was spiked while having a pint in a rural pub, an incident Ward described on The Claire Byrne Show as “shocking” and “abhorrent”. He said the victim is now reluctant to return to pubs because of fear and humiliation.

Ward said the bill is based on extensive consultation with groups such as Spike in Ireland and Safe Gigs Ireland, who report a growing trend of spiking “just for the craic” at events like Electric Picnic. He noted that since 2022 there have been 278 reports of spiking to An Garda Síochána, but no prosecutions under the Non‑Fatal Offences Against the Person Act.

Ward argued that many incidents go unrecorded because victims often seek hospital care rather than report to the Gardaí, meaning official figures likely represent only “the tip of the iceberg”. He stressed that spiking infringes on bodily autonomy and should be treated separately from broader sexual‑assault legislation.

The Spiking Offences Bill 2026 is currently at First Stage in Dáil Éireann.
